2001 Château Magdelaine

$169.99
2001 Château Magdelaine
Château Magdelaine, located in Saint-Émilion, has a history that dates back to the 18th century and is one of our favorite under-the-radar, right-bank Chateaus. We have just one case of 2001 today, which is a stand-out example from Chateau that is on par with great vintages like 2000 and 2005. The vineyard spanned approximately 11 hectares, predominantly planted with Merlot, complemented by a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, reflecting the typical blend of the area. Despite its illustrious history and contributions to the Bordeaux wine legacy, Château Magdelaine merged with Château Bélair-Monange in 2012, effectively ceasing to exist as an independent label. The estate was renowned for its traditional winemaking approach, emphasizing manual harvesting and a combination of modern and age-old vinification techniques to produce wines of exceptional quality and longevity. This is one of the few examples of the Chateau remaining, and it's a beautifully structured bottle that is just starting to enter a prime spot for drinking now.

John Gilman 94 points! "I do not have a ton of experience with the wines from the 2001 vintage in Bordeaux, which others term an “inconsistent” vintage, but all of the ones that I have drunk have been absolutely stellar, and this Château Magdelaine is no exception. The bouquet today is just starting to blossom at age twenty-one, offering up a refined constellation of dark berries, black cherries, cigar wrapper, black tea, a lovely base of limestone soil, woodsmoke, menthol and a deft touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and really shows off a lovely core of fruit, with good transparency and grip, still a fair bit of tannin and a very long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is a first class vintage of Château Magdelaine. (Drink between 2027-2085)"
