2016 Marie Courtin Champagne Efflorescence

$69.99
2016 Marie Courtin Champagne Efflorescence
Some of Grower Champagnes' hardest-to-source producers, Marie Courtin, is the epitome of a Grower Producer. This small property is operated by Dominique Moreau, who named her estate after her grandmother, Marie Courtin, describing her as a woman of the earth. Dominique Moreau fashions some fantastic Champagnes from the Aube, where Pinot Noir is king. Committed to Bio-dynamic farming principles, she is part of the region's elite, rivaling the wines of Cedric Bouchard, Vouette Sorbee, and the like. Her production is small in terms of Champagne, with under 50,000 bottles annually produced, but what she makes is extraordinary.
The transparency and vineyard character of her wines is quite exceptional and a key aspect of these Champagnes. Efflorescence is a Blanc de Noirs that comes from a single parcel of Massale selection Pinot Noir that is around 40 years old and planted at the bottom of a hill where there is a heavier clay content. This gives this Champagne ample body, richness, and power while still showing incredible depth and complexity, retaining excellent acidity to keep it fresh and energetic. The juice is vinified with native yeasts in used barrels, which helps build more complexity, and Dominique explains that it makes this Champagne very age-worthy. A Rare bottle, with only around 9,000 made a year, and since 2016 was a short vintage, probably much less. 2016 is exceptional and among the top vintages of this Champagne of all time. We have low pricing on a limited amount, and it is not a bottle to pass on for fans of grower Champagne.

Antonio Galloni 94 points! "The 2016 Extra Brut Efflorescence is fabulous. Rich, creamy and expansive on the palate, the Efflorescence marries intense Pinot Noir character with the razor-sharp focus that is such a signature here. There's tremendous depth and Pinot intensity. As good as the 2016 is, it only really blossoms with aeration. Don't be afraid to open this in advance and drink out of a larger glass that will allow the Pinot flavors and textures to fully emerge. No dosage. Disgorged: July, 2022."
