We have special pricing on the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er today, a fantastic wine from Dominique Gallois built on serious premier cru fruit. A tiny four-hectare family domaine established in the village in 1901, Gallois farms just one hectare of Premier Cru vineyards across Combe aux Moines, Les Goulots, and Petits Cazetiers, and this cuvée historically brings together the minuscule Goulots and Petits Cazetiers lots when there is too little wine to bottle them separately. The vines in these parcels date to 1974 and 1959, respectively, giving the wine a depth and authority that old vines have. The warm, dry 2020 season produced ripe, exceptionally clean fruit, but yields at the domaine fell to only around 19 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in a wine of unusual concentration. Black cherry, cassis, and blueberry are layered with earth, cedar, savory herbs, and Gevrey’s distinctive mineral character, carried by fine acidity, muscular yet polished tannins, and a long, persistent finish. There is plenty of the richness associated with 2020, but the wine remains balanced, energetic, and beautifully controlled. This is a powerful, traditionally styled Premier Cru built for the cellar and an outstanding opportunity to experience one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most under-the-radar domaines at a great price!

BH 91-94 A brooding and more deeply pitched nose grudgingly reveals its aromas of black cherry, cassis and poached plum that are trimmed in hints of earth and oak. The succulent, mouth coating and concentrated medium weight plus flavors are notably more powerful and more mineral-driven as well on the serious, firm and built-to-age finale.
