2014 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques

One of Louis Jadot's most outstanding crus, the Clos St. Jacques, is typically one of their strongest efforts in any vintage and excels with age. Having tried many vintages of the Clos St. Jacques over the years, it's one of their most consistent wines and one of the best buys for the vineyard compared to other producers landing at the perfect intersection of price and quality. The Clos St. Jacques in 2014 shows a very classic profile, and with the extra age in the bottle is finally starting to enter a great spot for enjoyment. As mentioned in both reviews below, this was a bottle that merited cellar time, with Tanzer saying it could warrant a higher score with some proper age in the bottle. The 2014 Clos St. Jacques is another testament to Jadot, and while it is considered an excellent white wine vintage, there was a good amount of stand-out reds made as well, and this effort from Jadot is noteworthy. This premier cru will continue to age beautifully but can be approached now if given some time to open up. We have a limited amount of the Clos St. Jacques available at low pricing, and those looking for an exceptional red Burgundy with some age look no further.

James Suckling 95 points! So floral, like a bouquet of flowers. Fills the glass. Full-bodied, yet beautifully balanced and subtle. Such purity of fruit and polish. I can't wait on this. Drink or hold. Will age beautifully.

Vinous (Stephan Tanzer) 93.5 points! "Good bright medium red Aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and crushed stone convey a very sexy, slightly high-toned liqueur-like quality Dense, fine-grained and taut, displaying piquant mineral energy and mouthwatering acidity to its flavors of raspberry, cherry and blood orange Really compelling inner-mouth tension here This firmly tannic, classic 2014 finishes with lovely rising floral length I would not be at all surprised if a decade of cellaring brought an even higher score"

Jasper Morris 93 points! Medium deep red purple, oak and a touch of oxidation has slightly affected the nose, causing some stewed fruit. It also makes the wine a bit clumsy in the mouth, and there is a lot of oak, but there is also a sign of very high class fruit typical of the vineyard. So this sample is not working today but I suspect a really fine wine underneath

"Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Jadot's 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has perhaps the most elegant bouquet of the quintet, perhaps the best translation of terroir with exquisitely defined red cherry and strawberry fruit suffused with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very supple, almost nubile in the mouth, leading to a concentrated finish that lingers long and tenderly. It does not quite deliver the sophistication of Bruno Clair's Clos Saint-Jacques, but with sufficient bottle age it should show its pedigree. Tasted September 2017."
