A follow-up to our last back vintage offer of Beaucastel; this time, we are back with the excellent 2009 vintage. As we mentioned in our previous offer, Beaucastel is one of the most recognized names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and has been the region's measuring stick for many years. The estate has made some incredible wines over the years, and 2009 is a lovely example that is showing very well now. 2006 was a vintage for the Southern Rhone, especially Chateauneuf du Pape, where it made for some beautifully opulent and rich wines with impressive depth while retaining the acidity to bring the necessary lift.
Sourcing from one 110-hectare plot, the vines here have been organically grown for over 50 years and is a textbook CDP terroir with rolled pebbles on the surface, sand, clay, and limestone deeper down. All 13 of the accepted varietals in this massive vineyard are grown, harvested separately, and vinified alone. Syrah and Mourvedre see oak fermentation, while the others go into enameled concrete and are only blended after fermentation. The final blend for 2009 came to Grenache 30%, Mourvèdre 30%, Vaccarèse, Terret noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Roussanne 15%, Counoise 10%, Syrah 10%, Cinsault 5%. The blend was aged in foudre for one year before bottling.
2009 is an excellent example of the powerful side of CDP. While some riper vintages go over the top, this has just enough restraint to keep composure and has continued to age gracefully since it was bottled. It is showing so well now and still has youthfully freshness, a beautiful core of fruit, and developing some incredible complexity of cured meats, leather, and tar with spice and herbs.
2009 still has plenty of life left and will continue to show well through the end of the decade. Like our last offer, these bottles have all been recently released from the Chateau and are in perfect condition. It is a great buy for Chateauneuf du Pape and is highly recommended.

A blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and 20% assorted varieties, the wine delivers a superb aromatic display of kirsch and black cherry-like fruits to go with a solid dose of underlying meat, truffle, earth, and leather. Full-bodied and gorgeously concentrated through the middle, with fleshy, ripe fruit, good acidity, and an abundance of structure, this will ideally be left alone for 7-8 years and then consumed over the following two decades."
