We are down to the last bottles of this excellent Bordeaux buy at nearly half the original release pricing. The customer feedback for this wine has been incredible; every time we open a bottle of this, it is better than the last. 2011 is so impressive and genuinely a no-brainer at this price point. The juice does not lie, and what is in the bottle speaks for itself. Currently, we have the only bottles available in the USA at this great low price.
Château La Providence was relatively unknown until Christian Moueix purchased the property in 2005. The small 10-acre vineyard is superbly situated in the center of the Pomerol plateau, between Trotanoy and Certain de May. Christian had been anxious to bring it into his stable, including Hosanna and La Fleur Petrus. The soils at Providence are predominantly gravel with some bands of clay, and Christian installed better drainage to help reduce yields and concentrate the crop. The vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and, since 2006, has been producing wines of substance, concentration, and incredible depth. The wine is aged 18 months in 50-80% new barrels and bottled without filtration. Production is approximately 1,200 cases per year.
After the 2012 harvest, the Christian had decided that the quality of Providence was high enough that the vineyards should be included in his flagship property, La Fleur Petrus, so 2012 was the last vintage of this lovely Pomerol.
The 2011 La Providence emerges from a vintage that has been slow to develop but is now considered one of Bordeaux’s ‘sleeper’ vintages, like 2001 and 2008. Just now entering the beginning of its peak drinking window, 2011 is delicious now and will keep and improve for 10+ years—a steal at this price (less than half of the release price). I’m a huge Pomerol fan, and this wine checked all the boxes for me with some great press from John Gilman and the Wine Advocate below!
John Gilman 93+ points! "The 2011 Providence is one of the finest young vintage of this wine that I can recall ever tasting. It is not as powerful as the very successful 2010 version, but stylistically, I may have a very slight preference for this beautifully balanced 2011. The very refined nose wafts from the glass in a complex mélange of black cherries, raspberries, espresso, woodsmoke, complex soil tones and a deft base of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and complete, with a superb core of fruit, excellent focus and balance, ripe tannins and a very long, bright and properly reserved finish. This is a very impressive young Pomerol that should absolutely delight the senses after it has slept away the next dozen years or so in the cellar. I am sure that Christian Moueix does not need my aesthetic advice, but Providence might get a bit more respect in the marketplace if it were adorned with a more traditionally styled label, as the modern label on this wine seems somewhat at odds with its very classic and classy profile in the glass. "Another brilliant wine from Christian Moueix, the 2011 La Providence exhibits copious aromas of black raspberries, forest floor and a hint of spring flowers in its full-bodied, surprisingly rich, dense, creamy-textured personality. Long and opulent, this impressive Pomerol is a great success in this vintage. Consume it over the next 15+ years."
