1989 Clos du Marquis is a standout wine from a benchmark vintage in Bordeaux, made by the team at Château Léoville-Las Cases, one of the Médoc’s most historically respected estates. While Clos du Marquis is often mistaken for a second wine, it has always been its own cuvée, sourced from a distinct 45-hectare section of vineyard in Saint-Julien, adjacent to Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Barton, with deep gravel soils ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1989 vintage was warm and dry, producing powerful, structured wines with ripe fruit and aging potential. Winemaking at the time featured traditional methods with fermentation in stainless steel followed by aging in oak barrels (approximately 40% new). Now with over three decades in bottle, the wine is hitting a beautiful mature phase, showing cassis, cedar, and graphite with softened tannins and a long, savory finish.
