1998 Michel et Marc Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Pitures

Cellar Tracker 92 pts!

The 1998 Michel & Marc Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Les Pitures is a true cellar gem, offering 28 years of bottle age from a small, traditional Volnay domaine whose family roots stretch back centuries. Les Pitures is one of Volnay’s more substantial Premier Cru sites, situated toward Pommard beside Clos des Ducs, where the clay-limestone and marl soils tend to produce a deeper, more structured expression of Volnay with excellent aging potential. The 1998 vintage produced classically structured red Burgundies with freshness, perfume and firm underlying acidity, and the best examples have developed beautifully with time. At this stage, the wine should be entering a wonderful mature window, with red and dark cherry evolving toward dried flowers, sous-bois, savory spice, forest floor, and earthy mineral complexity while retaining the vintage's freshness and structure. This is exactly the mature, traditionally made Premier Cru Burgundy that has become increasingly difficult to find, particularly with nearly three decades of age already built in. Quantities are extremely limited, and as far as we can find, these are the only bottles of the 1998 currently available in the U.S. For anyone who enjoys mature Burgundy, this is a rare opportunity to pull a beautifully aged Volnay cellar gem straight from the shelf rather than waiting decades for it to develop.
