The 2001 Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Dames Hospitalières, produced by Patriarche Père et Fils, is a blend of three Premier Cru parcels—La Mignotte, Les Bressandes, and Les Teurons—totaling just under 3 hectares. Managed by the Hospices de Beaune, one of Burgundy’s most historic domaines dating back to the 15th century, the wine was auctioned in 2001 and later aged and bottled by Patriarche, a major négociant founded in 1810 with deep ties to Beaune’s winemaking tradition. The 2001 vintage was characterized by a cool, damp growing season, resulting in lower yields but good freshness and structure in the red wines. This wine was vinified separately by parcel and matured in French oak before blending. Now with over two decades of age, it shows bright red cherry and dried rose on the nose, with a supple, lifted palate, refined tannins, and lingering earthy spice—a mature and elegant expression of Beaune Premier Cru with both historical value and drinking appeal. We also had a close friend in France try a bottle at the domaine recently and said it was a fantastic example of Beaune with age!
