With his new winery completed a few years ago, Stephane Ogier continues to make an extensive range of wines from his Côte-Rotie Lieu-dits, which remain among the most sensational examples in the appellation. Ogier beautifully brings out the individual expression of his 15+ vineyard sites, with La Viallière among his best this vintage. The vines here were only about 25 years old at the time and planted on Brown/Mica schists. Always hand-harvested and sorted, it saw 100% whole clusters with native yeast fermentation before aging for 26 months in 20% new oak. This is a structured and powerful wine with fantastic complexity and depth elegantly woven together. The 2016 vintage was quite lovely for Côte-Rôtie, and this wine is a beauty that is showing well now at 10 but will continue to age. We have low pricing on this one today, on a limited amount arriving later this month, and it's not one to miss!
Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 96 points!" Bright purple. A highly perfumed, complex bouquet displays mineral-driven dark berry, potpourri, exotic spice and incense qualities, and a smoky bacon nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering penetrating, smoke-accented boysenberry, candied licorice, spicecake and candied violet flavors supported by a core of juicy acidity. Smoothly blends richness and delicacy and finishes strikingly long and youthfully tannic, leaving floral pastille and allspice notes behind. (Drink between 2025 - 2035)
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points! "Lastly, the 2016 Côte Rôtie Le Vialliere comes from a gem of a site located in the northern part of the appellation. It’s a balanced, complete Côte Rôtie that offers a complex bouquet (red and black fruits, spice, spring flowers, and game), medium to full body, terrific purity of fruit, and a seamless, elegant texture that just glides across the palate. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age but will keep for two decades. (Drink between 2021-2041)"
Wien Advocate (Joe Czerwinski) 95 points! "Along with the other 2016s from Ogier, the 2016 Cote Rotie La Vialliere boasts gorgeous aromas of roses, tea leaves and raspberries. It's full-bodied, plush and velvety on the palate, with a long, cranberry-ish finish that shows great freshness and energy. This offering is attractive now, but I expect it will age gracefully for at least 15 years."
