In a forgotten part of Rousillon is the nearly uninhabited corner of the Agly Valley, where the winds whip almost every day of the year is where Domaine du Clos de Fees calls home. This landscape pushes up against the Pyrenees mountains where the steep blue cliffs of the Vingrau overlook this unknown Domaine. This project started with a single man looking to move from the restaurant and consumer side of wine to the actual production when he landed on this garrigue desert landscape home to ancient plantings of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan, some of which are well over 100 years old. The planting style here is like a goblet or bush style with no trellising, and many of the vines grow horizontally from the constant bombardment of wind. Many of the older vines will sometimes only produce two bunches of berries, making yields very low.
The Sorcieres is a magical wine and easily the best we have tried from Rousillon. It is a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and 20% Carignan; the Grenache and Carignan come from 40 to 80-year-old vines while the Syah is a selection of younger plantings all planted on clay-limestone soils. This is vinified in stainless with a minimal use of SO2. The nose explodes with a pure medley of berries, strawberry, cranberry, blueberry, and blackberry provide an inviting entry leading to blood orange, violets, underbrush, and wet stones; developing a lovely perfume as it opens up. The palate has an excellent attack and presence of fruit with a silky texture. This is light and energetic while at the same time rich and palate-staining. The balance from start to finish is exceptional and ends very long with red fruit skin, minerals, and dry extract. The Sorcieres is drinking great now but has the structure for a few years of aging. An incredible bottle for the money and so rare not just in the USA, but in the world. We have some of the only bottles available, all of which came directly from the Domaine. This not just the best wines we have tasted from Rousillon but one of the top red wines we have tried in this price range all year and is huge surprise that highly recommended.
