We all love a great Bordeaux value, and the Madame de Beaucaillou is an excellent example. This is made by the team over at Ducru Beaucaillou and is one of the best values of the vintage for Bordeaux. This wine shows the beauty that properly grown Merlot can offer, complimented by a bit of both Cabernet varietals and a bit of Petit Verdot. This is a serious little value that can be enjoyed now but is classic enough to stow away for a few years if desired.
A beautiful Bordeaux value bottle, Madame de Beaucaillou is the second label of Haut-Medoc producer Chateau Beaucaillou. Made as an hommage to Madame Eugène-Borie, an inspiration for Ducru Beaucaillou and one of the many female owners of the Chateau.
Madame de Beaucaillou is made at the Ducru Beaucaillou Chateau and is vinified by the same team that makes the flagship wine. Mostly a blend of Merlot (68%) with 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The fruit is carefully selected before vinification and ages for 12 months in 20% new oak. This is an ambitious yet very successful Cuvee that shows a beautiful sense of place with very pure fruit, excellent for drinking early but still shows restraint with nice structure and mineral presence that we expect from Bordeaux. It is an impressive bottle, and though only a few vintages have been made so far, 2019 is one of the best. With the few extra years in the bottle since its release, it is absolutely lovely right now and will continue to drink well over the next five or so years.
James Suckling 92 pts! "Really floral and pretty with currants, cherries and some violets and stones. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture. Attractive tannins and stony undertones. A large percentage of merlot with the cabernet, making it fresh and firm. Sophisticated. Better after 2024."
Decanter (Jane Anson) 91 pts! "Entirely new wine this year from Ducru Beaucaillou plots in Haut-Medoc (in Cussac Fort Médoc, just over the border). This has a juicy balance, and round supple tannins, approachable but with ageing potential if you want to wait four or five years before opening. High levels of Petit Verdot help add spice and deepen the feel of the wine. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. (Drink between 2023 - 2035)"
Jeb Dunnuck 90 pts! "Coming from the Haut- Médoc and bottled in May, the 2019 Madame De Beaucaillou reveals a deep ruby/purple as well as a great nose of red and black cherries, leafy herbs, damp earth, and flowers. Medium-bodied, mouth-filling, and balanced, it has the vintage's purity and focus front and center yet still brings plenty of fruit, texture, and pleasure. Drink this beauty over the coming 4-6 years. (Drink between 2022 - 2028)"
