2019 Stéphane Ogier Condrieu La Combe de Malleval Eta Late March 2026

2019 Stéphane Ogier Condrieu La Combe de Malleval Eta Late March 2026

We have excellent pricing today on Stéphane Ogiers 2019 Condrieu “La Combe de Malleval! 100% Viognier from about 3 hectares of vines from granite soils in two key sectors, “Veauvignière” in Malleval and “La Combe” in Saint Pierre de Bœuf. The fruit is hand-harvested and rigorously sorted from roughly 25-year-old vines planted at high density (about 10,000 vines per hectare) and cropped at around 35 hl/ha to achieve better concentration, where some Viognier can be a bit watery. Stéphane Ogier represents the latest chapter of a seven-generation Ampuis family, joining the domaine in 1997 and taking full control in the early 2000s, and he has applied the same precision that made his Côte Rôties essential to whites like this, and the wines have never been better since his new cellar and fermentation room were completed a few years back. In the cellar, the wine is aged for about 10 months on fine lees in 500-liter barrels, a choice that adds texture and breadth while preserving the granite-driven minerality. 2019 in the Northern Rhône combined a very hot mid-summer with welcome late-season balance and clean harvest conditions, and it shows here as a Condrieu that is generous but not heavy, with real drive and length, making it a serious buy for Viognier, especially at this low pricing!

Decanter (Mark Walls) 95 pts!  Lemon verbena and apricot. Soft, juicy, with a touch of apricot skin to the green tea and white flowers. It's opulent but not massive, with good depth of Condrieu character. Very good example of Condrieu in 2019, not overly opulent nor is it weak in fruit. He will release the 2018 Vieilles Vignes de Jacques Vernay in 2022; he has made it in 2019, but it won't be available to taste until release. Partly from Malleval, partly from Saint Pierre de Boeuf. 2/3 in Stockinger demi-muid. Malo blocked in 2019.
