2020 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie

$139.99
2020 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie

We have a late release of Niellon’s 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie today at this excellent pricing! One of the gems of the lineup alongside the Truffières, the Maltroie is especially successful in 2020 and stands as one of the finest examples Niellon has produced. Michel, the head of this renowned address and a master winemaker with more than 50 vintages to his name, is joined by his son-in-law and grandson at this small family domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet, where farming is carried out as sustainably as possible under lutte raisonnée. In classic Niellon style, the fruit is picked early to preserve freshness and acidity rather than chase richness, with elegance always the priority, and the domaine is often among the first to harvest in the village. Shallow limestone soils give the wine its hallmark precision and minerality, and in the excellent 2020 vintage, that translates into a beautifully structured white Burgundy with pear, citrus, white flowers, toasted nuts, bright acidity, and a tightly wound, ageworthy. After some time in the bottle, it is starting to show very well, and at this price, it is a particularly compelling buy. Don't miss it!

John Gilman 93 points! "Because of the aftermath of the pandemic, I did not have a chance to visit with Michel Coutoux of Domaine Niellon during my shorter than usual visit to Burgundy in November of 2021, so I had never tasted any of his 2020s before this superb bottle of Clos de la Maltroie. The wine is absolutely beautiful and drinking already with great style at four years of age. The bouquet delivers a precise aromatic constellation apple, iodine, a lovely base of stony minerality, orange blossoms and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and zesty, with lovely purity and precision, a vibrant core of fruit, lovely soil signature and a long, zesty and impeccably balanced, complex finish. This is really first class Chassagne!"

Burghound 92 points! "There is a whiff of the exotic present on the slightly honeyed aromas of white peach, freshly sliced citrus and a floral top note. The succulent, even seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess both good volume and density that contrasts somewhat with the bone-dry, moderately austere and borderline tannic finale. The Clos de la Maltroie is usually approachable young, but this sneaky long effort is going to require at least some patience. In a word, lovely."
