2020 Domaine Thenard Montrachet

$599.99
2020 Domaine Thenard Montrachet

Domaine Thénard is a revered estate with a storied winemaking legacy. With roots dating back to the 18th century, the estate has been carefully tended by generations of the Thénard family, ensuring a profound understanding of the land and its vines. Nestled in Givry, Domaine Thénard boasts prime vineyard locations. Most surprisingly, Montrachet ranges from 1 to 10 barrels a year. Meticulous attention to detail and old-school equipment is at every step of the winemaking process, from an old collection of wooden pressed to rudimentary open-top wood fermenters (for the red), resulting in wines of extraordinary character true to the vineyards they are sourced from. The estate's commitment to sustainable viticulture and a harmonious balance between tradition and innovation further solidify Domaine Thénard's status as a distinguished producer of exceptional Burgundy wines. The Montrachet is their crown jewel, and they have two large plots, one of which was planted in 1945. While a fair amount of it is sold to their usual clients, they keep a few barrels to bottle themselves. The wines are aged in five different types of new oak from 5 different tonneliers, plus some older barrels. Due to the small annual production and a good portion being sold off, the Montrachet here is a rare find, a fantastic example that can be had at reasonable pricing considering the prestige and cost of fruit from this grand cru vineyard. This is one of the top buys for 2020 Montrachet, this vintage, and we have just a few bottles available at this excellent price.

Decanter (Charles Curtis) 96 pts!  Baron Thénard is the second-largest proprietor of Montrachet after the Marquis de Laguiche. To taste through in advance of blending, it is necessary to taste all eight barrels in the cellar. These run the gamut from buttery and rich (but not heavy), in a cask from Seguin Moreau; to the Rousseau barrel, more maked by the wood, to the Chassin barrel, which is spicy, rich and lovely, to the Cadus, which is almost tropical, with exotic coconut aromas. The final assemblage will no doubt contain all of these. (Drink between 2023 - 2040)
