The 2021 Adelaida Pinot Noir HMR Estate comes from one of California’s oldest Pinot Noir sites—HMR Vineyard, planted in 1964 to the proprietary HMR clone. Located near the ocean in one of the coolest spots of Paso Robles' Adelaida District AVA, this limestone-rich site sits at 1,700–1,900 feet and produces fruit with natural acidity and Burgundian-like minerality. Yields are extremely low, typically under one ton per acre, contributing to the wine’s depth and concentration. The 2021 vintage benefited from a cool growing season with extended hang time, yielding a Pinot of vibrancy and structure. Winemaking is traditional: hand-harvested fruit, native yeast fermentation with partial whole cluster inclusion, and 15 months in French oak (about 30% new). Family-owned Adelaida, founded in 1981 and led by winemaker Jeremy Weintraub, remains committed to estate-driven wines. This 2021 release offers bright red cherry, cranberry, and rose petal aromas with silky tannins and limestone-driven precision—appealing to both classic domestic Pinot lovers and Burgundy enthusiasts alike.
Wine Advocate (Eric Brooks) 95 pts! The 2021 Pinot Noir HMR Estate Vineyard was vinified with 25% whole clusters and matured for 15 months in 40% new French oak. It has spicy scents of red cherry, cinnamon, tea leaves, charcuterie and underbrush, opening to finer details as it spends time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate has a powerful core of spicy fruit framed by chalky tannins and fireworks of fresh acidity, and it has a long, latent finish. Give it 2-3 years in bottle or a couple of hours in a decanter. 1,358 cases were made, and it will be released in the spring of 2024.
Vinous (Eric Guido) 94 pts! The 2021 Pinot Noir HMR Vineyard is savory from the first tilt of the glass, opening with a beguiling blend of flowery underbrush, worn leather and crushed stones that gives way to dried black cherries. This is soothingly round with a cascade of ripe red berry fruits, complemented by rosy inner florals and a hint of exotic spice. The 2021 finishes wickedly fresh, literally leaving the mouth watering for more as an air of sweet lavender slowly fades. (Drink between 2024 - 2032)
