2022 Domaine Dampt Frères Chablis Grand Cru Bougros

2022 Domaine Dampt Frères Chablis Grand Cru Bougros

The Grand Crus from Dampt Frères are great and some of the best buys in Chablis, and today we have the Bougros, a fantastic example of how much quality this address can deliver. The Dampt family has been working with fruit from Bougros since 2008, sourcing from this great southwest-facing Grand Cru at the northern end of the Chablis Grand Cru slope. Bougros is naturally one of Chablis's broader, more powerful expressions, with its Kimmeridgian limestone and clay soils giving the wine tremendous concentration while preserving the region's mineral character. Dampt handles the wine with a restrained mix of tank and barrel, building texture and depth without letting the oak dominate. The warm 2022 vintage was particularly successful in Chablis, producing ripe, generous Chardonnay with excellent concentration while maintaining enough acidity and mineral tension to keep the wines fresh. This shows that balance beautifully, with citrus, green apple and ripe orchard fruit joined by flint, chalk and a distinctly saline mineral character. The palate is powerful and broad but still focused, with impressive depth and a long, energetic finish. This is a compelling Grand Cru Chablis from an under-the-radar producer that continues to offer tremendous quality and remains one of the more interesting values at the Grand Cru level.

John Gilman 93+  The 2022 Bougros bottling from the Dampt brothers is a superb example of this fine vintage. The wine comes in at a svelte thirteen percent octane in 2022 and delivers a bright and beautifully complex bouquet of apple, pear, beeswax, chalky minerality, oyster shell, lime blossoms and just a whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and soil-driven, with a beautiful core of fruit, lovely acids and grip, excellent balance and a long, complex and wide open finish. As I have mentioned previously, I have the distinct impression that these vines lie lower down in the vineyard of Bougros, where the wines tend to have more chalky minerality than those found further up the slope in this fine grand cru. This is outstanding. (Drink between 2024 - 2050)
