Élodie Roy is quickly becoming one of the exciting young names to watch in Burgundy, and the 2022 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge is a perfect example of why her wines are beginning to attract so much attention. Before returning to her family vineyards in Maranges for her first estate vintage in 2018, Élodie spent 11 years working alongside Anne Gros in Vosne-Romanée, eventually becoming her right hand and gaining invaluable experience at one of Burgundy’s great domaines. The 2022 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune is produced from a selection of the best Pinot Noir fruit across three parcels, with a substantial proportion of whole clusters and no oak during élevage, keeping the focus firmly on purity, freshness, and vineyard character, while the remaining plots are sold off. The excellent 2022 vintage gives the wine beautiful red fruit, with strawberry and raspberry joined by rose petals, cracked pepper, graphite and subtle savory notes, carried by juicy acidity and fine tannins. While the scores aren't huge, this received some nice notes from Neal Martin and Jasper Morris. This is pure, energetic, easy-to-drink Pinot Noir with real personality and a surprising amount of seriousness for Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Vinous (Neal Martin) 89 pts! The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge Hautes-Côtes de Beaune is a blend from three hectares and represents a selection of the best bunches. It includes 60% whole bunches added into the vat as a millefeuille. The slightly rustic rose offers dark berry fruit, cracked black pepper and touches of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. The absence of oak means that this has a kind of rawness that I really like, strangely, for the second time in my tasting, reminiscent of a cool red Loire. Very fresh with a graphite-tinged finish. This will shine on the dinner table. (Drink between 2025 - 2033)
Jasper Morris 87-89 points! "An assemblage of plenty of plots. She makes this just from her best vines and sells the rest in wine. Half whole bunch, all in stainless. July bottled. Pretty lively pink purple, with a very attractive perfumed fresh rose petal nose. Strawberries too. A lovely wine for drinking copiously."
