One of the rarest bottles of Les Clos from Collet is a very hard-to-find wine, and currently, we have the only bottles from any vintage in the USA. Heir to a long line of Chablis Growers, Jean Collet started his Domaine in 1954. Later, when Jean retired, his son Gilles took over but became afflicted by nerve damage on the part of his body and had to pass the torch early to his son Romain. At 21, Romain took over the domain and began working in the cellar and the vineyards, incorporating more organic and biodynamic practices into his regimen, achieving certification in 2018. Romain, at an early age, saw the potential in the domaine, improving it with better farming practices, the use of natural yeasts, and a more sustainable approach. He even uses different vessels for fermentation, including concrete eggs, which he expertly puts to good use in many of his crus. The Collet's piece of Les Clos features vines that are 65+ years old and are more loosely planted than the norm at 6,000 vines per hectare (typically, you see 8,000+). The parcel is located at the lower end of the slope, where there is a lot more clay, which gives the wines from this section a bit more richness and generosity, which pairs very well with the classic Chablisien style here. This is a great example of Les Close from this great Chablis vintage, and it comes highly recommended!
Burghound 91-93 points! "This also possesses an abundance of wood influence that stops short of completely overshadowing the cooler and more floral-suffused nose of mineral reduction, oyster shell and acacia blossom scents. There is equally good size, weight and powerful to the muscular big-bodied flavors that flash even more minerality on the compact and built-to-age finale. This could be reasonably approached in 5 or so years but it will require 8 to 10 to see it at its peak."
