We have special pricing on these 2022 Joannès Violot-Guillemard Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards, a fantastic example of Volnay from a producer we rarely offer. The 2022 Brouillards is a beautiful example of the domaine’s elegant, terroir-driven style, bridging the finesse of Volnay with a little extra Côte de Beaune depth. Violot-Guillemard is a small family estate with six generations of history, now led by Joannès and his father, Thierry, farming roughly eight hectares across Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, and several other important appellations. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1999, and the cellar philosophy is deliberately hands-off: indigenous yeasts, no filtration, restrained oak use, and as little technical intervention as possible, all to let each vineyard shine. Les Brouillards is a great Volnay 1er, sitting at the northern end of Volnay near the Pommard border. That position gives the wine a slightly broader, more structured personality than some of the village’s more delicate Premier Crus, while still retaining the perfume and silkiness that make Volnay so attractive. The generous 2022 vintage suits the site particularly well, bringing ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit, violet, spice and earthy undertones, all wrapped in fine tannins and excellent freshness. There is real charm here already, but also enough depth and structure to reward time in the cellar. It is a lovely, classically styled Premier Cru from a domaine that remains somewhat under the radar, given the quality of its wines, making it a tremendous buy for Premier Cru Volnay from this great vintage.
Vinous (Neal Martin) 93 points! "The 2022 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru has another enticing bouquet, with pure, lifted red berry fruit, briar, touches of undergrowth and truffle—all very refined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied, expressive and poised, with sappy red cherry and wild strawberry flavors, fine backbone and weight and grip on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London. (Drink between 2026-2042)"
