Ecard’s Serpentières has been one of our top-selling red Burgundies over the years, and we are excited to have the 2023, which is the newest release from the domaine, and the wines are better than ever! Ecard is a tiny operation in Savigny-lès-Beaune, working less than five hectares, and is run by Michel Ecard, the son of Maurice Ecard, one of the great traditional names of the village. When Maurice retired in 2005, the original family domaine was dissolved rather than split, but Michel, who had worked beside his father for most of his life, continued on by renting vines from his uncle and creating his own label. The wines have a slightly more refined feel than Maurice’s but remain classic Savigny. Michel does most of the vineyard and cellar work himself, avoiding herbicides and pesticides, plowing between the vines, limiting yields, and keeping a hands-off approach in the cellar. Les Serpentières is one of the best premier cru sites in Savigny and the top wine at this domaine, coming from an old-vine parcel planted in the 1930s on gravelly soils with iron-rich marl and clay. The 2023 vintage is a terrific fit here, offering generous fruit, supple tannins, and immediate charm, while the old vines and premier cru site add depth, structure, and a savory mineral character that make this more serious than most Savigny. These wines remain very hard to find in the USA, especially at this price, and the 2023 Serpentières is once again one of the strongest buys we have seen for premier cru red Burgundy.
