We have been buying Mongeard-Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge for years, and the 2023 is one of the best versions of this wine to date. From one of Vosne-Romanée’s historic family domaines, this Bourgogne has always punched well above its classification and can easily give the impression of a village-level Côte de Nuits wine. The domaine’s Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from parcels in Vougeot and Flagey-Échezeaux, including Les Hautes-Rives, Les Autrots and Les Lutenières, with vines averaging around 40 years old on Jurassic soils of limestone gravel and stones over deep clay. The fruit is hand-harvested and fully destemmed, with élevage in seasoned barrels rather than new oak, keeping the vineyard character front and center. 2023 was a generous vintage, but Mongeard-Mugneret controlled yields carefully and produced Pinot Noir with excellent ripeness, perfume and freshness rather than letting it go over the top. It’s a gorgeous example with beautifully expressive red and blue fruit, florals and Vosne-like spice, along with a supple texture, fine tannins and terrific balance. It is already drinking beautifully and has more depth and polish than we normally expect at the Bourgogne level. This has been one of our favorite values from the domaine for several vintages, but 2023 takes it another step forward and is one of the best examples here yet. It's a terrific buy for anyone looking for serious red Burgundy without village-level pricing.
