We just tasted this Champagne from Michel Jacquot for the first time last week, and it's a lovely bottle at this price point. Michel Jacquot is a small Côte des Bar grower that delivers exactly what we look for in value-driven Champagne: good vineyard character, generous fruit, and enough lees-aged complexity to drink well beyond its price point. Based in Arconville in the southern Aube, the estate works vineyards planted largely to Pinot Noir on the region’s limestone-rich soils, giving the wines a broader, more vinous personality than many Champagnes from farther north. The Brut is traditionally built around roughly 90% Pinot Noir with 10% Chardonnay and includes reserve wine from previous vintages, followed by at least 24 months of aging on the lees before disgorgement. The result is immediately appealing, with golden apple, pear and yellow plum joined by stone fruit, toasted hazelnut, brioche and yeasty notes, all carried by fresh acidity and a soft, balanced mousse. There is enough Pinot Noir richness to give the wine real substance, but it remains crisp, refreshing and remarkably easy to drink. Michel Jacquot may not have the name recognition of Champagne’s larger houses, but that is precisely where the value lies, as this is honest, characterful Grower Champagne and a terrific bottle for anyone looking for serious Champagne at an everyday price!
