We have a great half-bottle buy today from Domaine Antonin Guyon, a family estate based in Savigny-lès-Beaune, that crafts a serious Aloxe-Corton from the premier cru Les Fournières, a stony clay-limestone mid-slope parcel at the foot of the Corton hill that naturally gives structure and mineral drive. While 2016 was a frost-affected, low-yield year, it delivered wines of purity, concentration, and classic balance. The fruit was hand-picked, fully destemmed, fermented in tank with gentle extraction, then aged about 14 to 16 months in mostly used French oak. The profile is vivid and savory with dark cherry and blackberry with redcurrant, violet, pepper, a hint of cocoa, and an iron-tinged finish. The palate is medium plus in weight, framed by fine but firm tannins and lively acidity, and it finishes long and stony. This is in the perfect place to enjoy now and is a great find in this small format, which will continue to age for another 5 to 10 years.
John Gilman 91 points! "I did not note how badly the two premier crus in Aloxe were hit by the frost of 2016, but given where they are located, I have to believe that they were probably pretty badly frosted and down at least half in this vintage. The 2016 les Fournières was showing very well at the time of my visit, offering up a fine bouquet of red and black cherries, bonfire, venison, iron-like soil tones and raw cocoa. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite sappy at the core, with fine soil signature, ripe tannins and a long, complex and promising finish."
