2016 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas

$99.99
2016 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas

Billard-Gonnet is a traditional Domaine located in Pommard, and we have the last bottles of this much-loved 2016 Pommard that the domaine has to offer, direct from their cellar. The Rugiens from here is a classic example of this great terroir and the best wines that Billard-Gonnet produces. It has been a few years since we have offered these wines, but we have special pricing on a late-release 2016 Rugiens today, which is starting to show nicely at a decade of age. Rugiens is a powerful wine that needs some time in the cellar to soften up, but has the structure to age for decades. From a classic producer like Billard-Gonnet, it is probably one of the longest-lived versions made today, along with other traditional producers like Michel Gaunoux, which is typically more expensive. A powerful, soil-driven wine that is, in our opinion, the pinnacle of Pommard and as good as the Grand Crus. We have the only bottles of this wine available in the USA, and it's a fantastic buy for premier cru red Burgundy with 10 years of age!

Burghound 94 pts!  Here too there is just enough wood present to mention though not so much as to intrude on the appeal of the red and dark currant aromas that are liberally lacked with violet, earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent size, weight and density to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a firm, long and very serious youthfully austere finish. This is definitely built-to-age and a wine that is going to need at least a decade first. (Drink starting 2036)
