2017 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers

$189.99
2017 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers
We have a lovely back-vintage of Grunchers from Chambolle-Musigny great, Barthod. Barthod makes some of the most exciting wines in Chambolle, and Ghislaine likes to bottle all of her holdings separately to show off their individuality. Grunchers is one of the top crus from this address and on par with the Cras and Fuees this vintage. Located in the northwestern section of Chambolle, Grunchers, just east across the road from Fuees and Cras and a mere stone's throw from the great vineyard of Bonnes Mares. The vineyards in this part of Chambolle have a higher percentage of Clay in the soil, giving them more power and muscularity than the wines that come from the southern end.
2017 is a very fine example that can be approached now and will easily continue to age for another decade. It is always nice to grab something with a bit of age from Barthod, and we have low pricing today on this fantastic effort.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 92-94 points! "The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru comes replete with veins of blue fruit on the nose, perhaps giving just a little nod toward Vosne-Romanée in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin compared to the domaine’s other crus. It feels quite saline and peppery toward a finish with a long aftertaste. This is one of their more intellectual offerings this year. (Drink between 2022-2042)"

John Gilman 92+ points! "The Barthod family’s 2017 Gruenchers is absolutely classic in all respects, wafting from the glass in a vibrant aromatic constellation of red plums, cherries, roses, chalky soil tones gamebird, pomegranate and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully soil-driven, with a sappy core of red fruit, bright acids and fine purity and grip on the long and ripely tannic finish. Fine, fine juice. 2 (Drink between 2025-2065)"

Burghound 91-93 points! "Here too the nose is composed of an elegant array of airy red cherry, violet and plum where additional breadth is present in the form of spice and lavender nuances. The sleek, rich and well-detailed flavors exude evident minerality that carries over to the balanced if compact, serious and moderately austere finale. A high quality built to age Gruenchers of power and punch though it is by no means rustic."

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 91-93 points! "Medium deep purple and the nose has hidden itself a bit too. Yet it is beautifully balanced on the palate, with a really singing graceful fruit, more red than black, fine texture and quite good length. Not ultra-concentrated but certainly fine. Ghislaine finds a touch of citrus, maybe pomegranate Tasted: November 2018."
