2019 is an absolutely exceptional effort from Nicolas Rossignol, who has really strutted his classical side in the past few vintages. This is a big vintage for this Rossignol, and Les Epenots is ranking up among the all-time best this year. The Domaine's vines are located in the Petit Epenots section on the Beaune side. The vines here are over 40 years old, planted on reddish soils with excellent drainage. Intense, powerful, and vineyard-driven, this is textbook Pommard with dark fruits, spice, earth, and minerality. This is a sensational 2019, one of the buys of the vintage for Pommard, and as Allen Meadows says below, "Superb".
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 94-96 points! "Rossignol's terrific 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots wafts from the glass with aromas of plums, dark berry fruit, exotic spices, peonies, blood orange and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's deep and multidimensional, with a concentrated core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a long, lively finish. As is often the case, this old-vine cuvée is the highlight of the portfolio, and it will be worth a special effort to track down."
Allen Meadows 93-95 points! "A ripe and very earthy nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of poached plum and dark currant that are liberally laced with hints of spice and floral elements. There again outstanding volume to the round, caressing and powerful yet beautifully refined flavors that conclude in a dusty, sappy and bitter pit fruit inflected finish. This is a wine of punch and finesse with a lovely sense of harmony. Note well though that the underlying tannins are dense, and this is likely to require the better part of 20 years to reach its apogee. In a word, superb."
